The New York Times reported that Dory Previn, singer-songwriter, poet died on Tuesday at the age of 86.
I, in my younger years, was a follower of Dory Previn. If you click through to her obit there’s a picture of her from 1973 playing at The Bitter End in NYC. I was at a front table that night listening to such great tunes as: Did Jesus Have a Baby Sister and The Midget’s Lament.
I was at her Carnegie Hall Concert which was released as a live album. (Yup, album). Her audio cd’s are available from Amazon as imports and some her tunes are available as MP3′s.
Her song, Beware of Young Girls, was about Mia Farrow. The scandal at the time was that Dory Previn’s husband, composer-conductor, Andre Previn, left Dory for Mia. Dory had a break down while waiting for a plane to take off and ended up institutionalized.
Dory Previn wrote lyrics for the theme songs to Valley of the Dolls, starring Sharon Tate and Inside Daisy Clover, starring Natalie Wood.
Dory Previn was immortalized in a song called, “Dory Previn”, by Camera Obscura.
RIP Dory Previn
